This custom Keystone Walnut dining table was built as the fourth commissioned piece for a longtime client, combining meaningful craftsmanship with thoughtful design solutions. Crafted from richly figured walnut slabs, the table features hand-fit “keystone” inlays made from highly figured crotch walnut, carefully placed where natural defects once existed. Supported by a custom H-frame I-beam steel base, the piece blends refined structure with the warmth and individuality of solid walnut.

This walnut dining table was created for a returning client who trusted the process enough to let the wood guide the design. The original slabs carried incredible character, but also a few deeply flawed sections that would normally be filled with resin. That wasn’t the direction they wanted.
So instead of covering the imperfections, we worked with them.
The damaged areas were carefully removed and replaced with highly figured walnut crotch pieces—what we call keystones. Each one was individually shaped and fit into place by hand, turning what could have been a flaw into one of the most distinctive parts of the table. The contrast in grain and figure creates movement across the surface while staying true to the integrity of the wood itself.
The walnut carries a deep richness throughout, with layered grain patterns and natural variation that shift in different light. Underneath, a custom H-frame I-beam steel base anchors the piece with strength and balance, giving the table a clean architectural presence without taking attention away from the top.
This table reflects what custom work is really about—not perfection, but intention. Every decision was made to preserve the character of the material while creating something meaningful, lasting, and completely one of a kind.
